You are probably right. I had to pull out my old Gazetteer to look, but it has red dashes going to Squaw Spring. Nowadays the old road is only passable to Willow Spring. That is where my buddy and I parked and hiked on down the wash. Like knuckleheads we did not have a GPS to pinpoint the exact location on the map. They could have made a wrong turn thinking they were headed to Mengel. The news reports have said that the remains were found SE of Goler. That could mean anything I suppose. The folks might have thought they could hike on to Squaw Spring and find water. Of course it was probably dry that time of year so they may have just kept on going, and they could have ended up SE or at least East of Goler. I would never have thought to go look in that direction. Many years ago I was camping up near Mammoth at a place called Hartley Springs. A nice place, but the spring is barely noticeable even at the best time of year. Just the other side of the hill there's a raging stream. Anyway there I am with the whole campground to myself and two pretty ladies who I assumed were German sneak up and ask me where the springs are. They could not understand how the place could be named a spring and not have lots of water. I am beginning to think that the group saw the Squaw Springs and headed that way and kept going hoping to find water, but did not. Of coure, I have never been to Squaw Spring so am just assuming it is dry most of the time. Your right about believing in GPS. Guess that's what happened to that lady and her son this summer.
