Road Conditions on Goler Wash and Mengel Pass

What are the current conditions in Goler Wash and Mengel Pass? I plan to drive that way next week. Also, a friend wants to come along driving his 2wd VW Thing - do you think he'll have much trouble with the current conditions? Thanks very much for the help.
