Scotty's last tour begins at 5:00pm, I believe, if you're interested.

I was down Lippencott in May. The road was its usual self - somewhat spooky because of the narrow and steeepness; low range really needed to prevent brake loss. The Xterra should make it. Just let your friends who aren't driving do the scenery watching.

The road out via Hidden Valley and Hunter mountain is, in my opinion, much more interesting. Plus, you'll be at elevation for a longer period of time, which is more comfortable. The floor last week was miserable - hot and humid. Elevations above 5000 were quite tolerable.

Your day will be long, and I'm not sure you'll make it to Lost Wages by dark, but it sounds like a decent enough plan. Be sure to get gas wherever you can. Remember that Scotty's Castle do NOT have gas at this time.

Make sure you have fix-a-flat and tire plug kit.

Your AT&T phone will not work anywhere in the valley, even where others report they get signal. 100 yards from the new towers at Cerro Gordo last week, I couldn't get signal. I don't think AT&T has agreements, which bug me because they are supposed to.
