Thank you so much guys for all that information.

Having now done a lot more research, looked at detailed maps and guide books, as well as your valuable advices, I've decided to take the following route:

today leave Yosemite, arrive at scotty's castle in the evening via Tom's proposed route, camp at mesquite for the night.

Tomorrow morning 5am (or whenever first light), go down racetrack. We should arrive at Lippencott road before noon.

Tomorrow noon, continue through lippencott road and down saline valley road, then hit the highway and get to vegas before dark.

This is pretty much what Tom has suggested but instead of going through hidden valley, I'm tempted to try the lippencott road. I've had mixed reports about how difficult it is nowadays, and since its only 7 miles I'm going to have a look if I can do it. I'm going to be in my Nissan Xterra offroad in stock setup, with 2 other friends, one of which is a much better driver than I.

We'll bring 10 gallons of water with us. (We need that for 3 days on el capitan anyway)

I havn't seen what I'm going to be up against yet, but I think we'll be ok, the only thing I'm really worried about is a breakdown since we're only in 1 truck, and I doubt we'll get cell phone signal out there. (mind you, my AT&T mobile internet works here in yosemite!)

So what do you guys think? Is it a really really bad idea to go down that road? Is it going to be ok to camp at mesquite this time of year? Are the time scales I suggestesd reasonable?

And then on the way back a week later I plan to go up saline valley road and visit the springs, and possiblly go through steel pass.

Thank you again for all your help.

Best regards,

Bern
