Yosemite to Vegas (through Death Valley)

Hi, I'll be driving from Yosemite NP to Las Vegas next week. I'd like to drive through Death Valley and use this chance to explore some back country roads. I was looking into things like the saline valley road or going on the racetrack valley roads.Where are the best places to explore without going too far out of the way on my way to Vegas? I do have a high clearance 4x4, but I wasn't looking for some technical rockcrawling.
