When I was through there in November '07 Mengel pass was worse than I have ever seen it and Warms Springs road was its usual rough self, but there was nothing to cause any problems, just go slow in places. Since then people have worked over the large rocks on the east side of Mengel, but I can't say if it is much better than the nasty stuff I saw in November. So, if I wanted to get to the Geologist Cabin, I would go in via Warm Springs.
