I do not think the yellow indicates campfire activity. My guess is that there is a mineral present (from the locations, likely an evaporite) that emits in one of the spectral bands that MODIS interprets as fire. The high ground temperatures normal for Death Valley in summer might play a role as well. Also, the yellow areas appear mostly in areas where camping is not permitted, and this time of year the number of campers in those areas would be small even if camping were legal there. Anyway my guess is that something besides fire is being (mis)interpreted by MODIS as fire.
