I registered but did not receive a confirmation email and cannot log in. Why?

If you receive your email from Verizon, AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail or another major email provider, our confirmation email was most likely filtered out as spam. Please consult your email provider as to how to retrieve filtered mail. If you cannot retrieve our confirmation email and cannot log in, please Click Here to Contact Us.

Do I need to register and log in to post a message?

No, you can still post an anonymous post without registering or logging in to Death Valley Talk. However, anonymous posts do not appear immediately! Rather, they held for review by a moderator who must release it before it appears for all to read.

What is an anonymous post?

An anonymous post is a post created by either a user who is not logged in, or by a logged in user who has intentionally changed their screen name to an anonymous screen name. Anonymous posts cannot use a screen name of any registered user.

What is an anonymous name?

An anonymous name is a screen name that is not being used by another registered user.

Why didn't my post show up?

Most likely your post did not show up because it was submitted anonymously. All anonymous posts are held for review by an administrator who must release it before it appears for all to read. This might be only a matter of minutes, or it may take several days. If you did not submit your post anonymously, then please reload your browser and the post should then appear.

It is also possible that your anonymous post did not pass the administrator's review because it contained language that is against the Death Valley Talk rules. Please see the Death Valley Talk Rules for more information on forum etiquette.

Can I post an anonymous message if I am already logged in?

Yes. You may place an anonymous post by changing the screen name field to another name one that is not being used by another registered user.

How do I add a link to a web page?

There are two steps to adding a link to a web page. First, enter the full URL address of the web page into the message box labeled "Optional Link URL:". A full URL is one that includes the "http://", such as:
http://www.deathvalley.com/exploring/exploring.shtml
Then, enter a phrase that you would like to assign to the link so that readers will have something to click on, for example:
Click here for the "Exploring Death Valley" page

How do I post a photo?

You can refer to a photo image that is already on the web, perhaps on your own web site, but you can not post a photo to our web site directly from your computer. To show a photo image that is already on the web, enter the full URL address of the image file into the message box labeled "Optional Image URL:". A full URL is one that includes the "http://", such as:
http://www.deathvalley.com/exploring/photos/saratoga.jpg

I did it correctly, but my photo is missing. Why?

If you trying to link to a photo that you've posted on one of the many popular free photo gallery web sites, note that most of them block attempts to show their images on outside web sites. If you are sure that you got your URL correct and a missing image icon appears instead of your photo, then your photo gallery web site is probably blocking our web site's request for your photo. It appears that PhotoBucket will allow you to show your photos on our web site. Also, many ISP's give their customers a small amount of personal web space free with their accounts. Check with your ISP to see if you can store your photos on their servers.

Can I put html tags anywhere in my posts?

No. You can not use HTML tags anywhere in your the post.

Why are there colons in the message when I try to post a followup?

Colons appear in the message dialog box when you try to followup up on a message to indicate that those lines are quoting the previous document.

My post had no bad language, but I received an error message about using a "Banned Word". What is this?

Because we allow posts by unregistered users, we are the constant target of automated spam advertisers that post thousands of message in a short time. When we go to approve unregistered posts we can find the real ones because there are so many spam advertisements, particularly online gambling. Therefore, we've banned a couple of gambling words such as "casino" and "gambling".

This is not an effort to curb your use of these words or subject of discussions. You can get around this by spelling it "C asino" for example. As spammers figure this out and adapt, we'll add or change the banned words list.

We regret having to do this, but we are one of the very last message boards on the internet that still allows anonymous participation, and this is one of the side effects.

Why did my post get removed?

Please see the DVTalk Rules for more information on forum etiquette.
